Guidelines for Student-Athletes
The opportunity to participate in LCBC is a privilege, not a right. Participants in these voluntary programs are expected to conform to specific conduct standards seen below:
Code of Conduct
- All members of LCBC automatically assume the role of 'Club Ambassadors' and as such are expected to represent the club and the community in an exemplary manner.
- A good, positive attitude and a strong commitment to effort and the team goals and philosophies is a must.
- It is the responsibility of the coach to instill in his/her players the highest standards of conduct both on and off the playing surface. These are the virtues of LCBC:
- They follow the acronym SCHAPE→ S - Spirit, C - Communication, H - Hustle, A - Approach, P - Precision, E - Enhance
Expectations and Responsibilities of Student-Athletes
- Team members will exhibit the highest standards of sportsmanship.
- Team members will present themselves at each game in a neat and tidy fashion.
- Team members will refrain from consuming any illegal drug or alcohol at any club-related function.
- Team members will refrain from performing any acts of willful damage regardless of the venue or circumstances.
- While under the supervision of a coach during the course of a game, practice, and tournament or as a spectator, team members will refrain from showing any disrespect for their fellow players, opposition coaches, opposition players, fans, referees or supervisors.
A violation of any of the 'expected behavior' (for example an ejection from competition) will result in an immediate suspension of the team member(s) involved (suspension from the immediate activity for one game). The violation will then be reported to the coach and the board for a suitable sanction. Possible sanctions include:
- Suspension from the team for a prescribed amount of time - be it days or the entire season. There will be no refunds for any games or tournaments missed.
Risks of Athletic Participation (Safety)
In spite of protective equipment, and the supervision and sound instruction by our coaches, there are some risks associated when someone participates in athletics. Injuries in some of our activities can and do occur. In extremely rare cases, death could also result. All athletes and their parents need to be aware and understand this possibility. LCBC will do all that we can to ensure a safe and healthy environment for our athletes. Each coach shall do everything necessary to ensure the safety of participants at all times. In addition, each coach should also:
- Provide supervision for all organized practices, games, trips, etc., and should ensure that all facilities are secure following the completion of an activity.
- Take a medical kit to all organized activities and other activities as required.
Hazing
Hazing or negative initiation activities are prohibited by LCBC. The planning, initiation of, or participation in such activities may lead to suspension or removal from a team with no refund given.
Guidelines for Parents
Responsibilities of a Parent/Guardian
Demonstrating good sportsmanship involves a commitment to fair play, ethical behavior, and integrity. This means;
- There must be no vulgar language or inappropriate language.
- No taunting or 'trash talking' of our opponents or their spectators.
- Spectators cannot leave the bleachers and enter onto the court during a game.
- Cheering should be done for our team and not against our opponent.
- Support the team, the players, and the coaches.
- Support the goals of sportsmanship and help bring pride and respect to your child and LCBC
- Support your child's role on the team. Every student-athlete will have a different role on the team with their own expectations.
Spectator Conduct
The conduct of student-athletes, coaches, fans, and anyone else involved in an activity that has ties to the club, reflects back on the club. It is expected that all involved will act in a reasonable and responsible manner or be held accountable for their actions.
- Realize that admission is a privilege to observe a contest and to support. This is not a license to verbally assault others or be generally obnoxious. Do not taunt, jeer, or attempt to distract the members of the opposing team.
- Remember that this is a learning experience for student-athletes, and also that mistakes are sometimes made. Praise athletes in their attempt to improve themselves as athletes.
- Be an exemplary role model by positively supporting the team in every manner possible. Enjoy the skill and competition.
- Recognize an outstanding play by either team. Show respect for the opposing players, coaches, spectators, and spectators.
- Avoid the use of profanity and derogatory or disrespectful yells, chants, songs, or gestures. Refrain from offensive or unruly behavior, which reflects poorly on LCBC.
- Respect the integrity and judgment of game officials. Accept their decisions without public protest. Do not confront a game official at halftime or after the game.
- Do not publicly criticize the coaches or athletes for the loss of a contest.
- Show concern for an injured athlete regardless of team affiliation.
- Respect school/venue property and the authority of school/venue officials. Remember that you are a guest of the host.
Athletes / Parents Grievance Procedures
The athlete and the coach should try to make every effort to resolve disputes when they arise.
The 24-hour rule is in place in the event that a player or parent has a question regarding playing time or any other issue. The premise behind the 24-hour rule is that all questions directed at the coach regarding playing time, etc. should be asked 24 hours after the game. This is done in an effort to keep cool heads and prevent student-athletes/parents/ coaches from saying something in the 'heat of the moment' that may be hurtful in nature.
Meetings with coach/ player or coach/player/parent can oftentimes be enough to settle an issue. This avenue should be taken whenever necessary.
- When an athlete or parent has a grievance, an appointment with the coach can be requested to discuss it.
- If the problem has not been resolved, then the Director of LCBC can be approached with the matter.
