Springbank Minor Hockey Association will provide reimbursement for course costs in accordance with the most up-to-date coach requirements grid provided by Hockey Alberta. Only courses taken in the current season will be reimbursed; only the cost of the course (including GST) with a receipt will be reimbursed. Retroactive reimbursements will not be given.
 
If courses are taken electively by a volunteer member and are not considered required per the Hockey Alberta grid, and said member was not assigned to a team, SMHA will not reimburse for such coach development. 
 
SMHA reserves the right to deny any application.
 
In take form:
  • Each coach will be responsible for their own submission of receipts 
  • We have set up an intake form via TeamLinkt.
  • You will be required to have your receipts in PDF format, ready to upload into the system, before starting the form
  • We require the receipt, not the course certificates
    • Can't find your receipt? Check your email history or log in to your Spordle account
  • If a receipt cannot be provided, you will be ineligible for reimbursement. We will not reach out for missing documentation.  
NOTE: Due to TeamLinkt being a registration software, when you check out, there will be a 'fee'. Please continue through and 'pay' as the system is set to 'pay offline'; this is how SMHA will track how much we owe you
 
What is covered
 
Only the cost of the course (including GST) will be reimbursed
 
Safety
  • SMHA has an internal policy that requires all our coaching staff to have Safety.
Coach Levels 1, 2, and Checking
  • Only Head Coaches are covered for age group-specific requirements as per the Hockey Alberta requirements grid
Exceptions:
  • U7 & U9
    • Any interested coaches at the U7 & U9 level are encouraged to take the Coach Level 1 as part of the reimbursement program
    • This will support the ratio mandate for U7 & U9, where there must be a coach with Coach level 1 for every 10 players. SMHA strives to appoint two co-Head Coaches to cover this ratio, but in the absence of a co-Head Coach situation, if all coaches engage in the Coach Level 1, these age groups are covered
  • U13 AA
    • Only the Head Coach is required to have Development 1 or High Performance; they are not required to have both, and will be reimbursed if required to take it within the current season
What is not covered: 
  • Respect in Sport Activity Leader
    • All coaches must have this certification to gain access to the team ice/bench
    • It must be renewed every 4 years and is not reimbursed by SMHA.
    • SMHA does not have an access code
  • Police checks
    • Volunteer Alberta covers Springbank Minor Hockey Association with a no-cost access code
    • SMHA has a process that must be followed in regard to Background checks. 
    • Those coaches going it alone will not be covered. Nor will third-party background checks be accepted
  • Connect Sport
    • Hockey Calgary Mental Health Initiative
    • Hockey Calgary provided a no-cost access code that was shared with all Coaches.
    • SMHA will not cover the cost incurred by a volunteer who did not use the access code

Safety Level 1 (All Coaches)

SMHA has an internal policy that requires all our coaching staff to have Safety. Hockey Alberta requires the person with the Safety training to be in attendance at all sanctioned team events To cover absences and the Hockey Alberta requirement, SMHA has an internal policy that all coaching staff must complete this course.

Coach Level 1 (U7&U9 coaches only)
