TORONTO UNITED FIELD HOCKEY CLUB - CODE OF CONDUCT

I agree to:

  • Play the sport I love with respect
  • Respect other members of all ages, parents, spectators, umpires, technical staff and coaches
  • Play safely with participants of varying skill levels
  • Act on and off the field in a manner that represents Toronto United in a positive light
  • Respect the facilities and the land we play on

ATHLETE STATEMENT

I believe that the true essence of sport is to strive for personal achievement and excellence through full and honest effort. I am committed to participating in sport with integrity, and to striving to win only by legitimate means. I pledge to learn, understand, and adhere to both the written rules of my sport and the accepted rules of fair play. I believe that violence and physical intimidation are harmful to sport, and I refuse to use such tactics in an attempt to gain an unfair advantage. I understand that officials, teammates, and opponents are all integral to sport and worthy of my respect. It is my responsibility to maintain self-control. I will accept officials' decisions without arguments, play aggressively but without hostility, and behave graciously in triumph or defeat.

RESPECT FOR OTHERS

I understand that Toronto United Field Hockey Club is an open and accepting environment for all people, cultures and walks of life regardless of field hockey experience and skill. I agree to act with respect toward all those I come into contact with through sport. This means I refrain from comments or behaviours which are abusive, offensive, racist, sexist or otherwise belittling or demeaning to others. I do not harass or tolerate harassment by others. I respect others as persons and treat them with dignity. I respect the privacy of others.

RESPECT FOR A SAFE PLAYING ENVIRONMENT

I do not endanger the safety of others through my actions. If I am of higher skill, I may need to change my style of play when around players of lower skill. If I am newer to the sport, I always endeavor to learn the skills safely so I don’t endanger any fellow members by accident. I agree to be aware of my surroundings, other club members and members of the public who may be on or near the turf or gym.

RESPECT FOR SPORT, TEAMMATES, COACHES AND OFFICIALS

I strive for personal excellence in sport. I honour and respect the spirit and traditions of sport. I do not impede the preparation for competition of other competitors or teammates. I respect the decisions of coaches, judges and officials.

RESPECT FOR TORONTO UNITED FIELD HOCKEY CLUB

I accept Toronto United Field Hockey Club’s rules, policies and procedures governing events and competitions in which I participate. I comply with the reasonable requests of organizers of Toronto United Field Hockey Club. I accept that I am an ambassador for field hockey and Toronto United Field Hockey Club and I refrain from any action which might bring both into disrepute.

RESPECT FOR FACILITIES

I respect the facilities at which we get to play and practice. I agree to maintain the facilities as a user and ensure I do not vandalize or leave garbage. I will report any damage or unsafe facilities to the club organizers.

RESPECT FOR THE LAND

Toronto United Field Hockey Club is based in Tkaronto, now known as the city of Toronto, which in Mohawk means ‘where there are trees standing in the water”. Today, Tkaronto is covered under Treaty #13 and the Williams Treaties. The land we live, practice, play and enjoy is the traditional territories of many First Peoples, including the Mississaugas of the Credit, the Anishnaabe, the Chippewa, the Haudenosaunee, and the Wendat peoples.

While we realize that simply acknowledging these lands is not a replacement for the land itself as our country continues to colonize and displace our First Peoples. This territory is part of ‘the Dish with One Spoon’ wampum, a Treaty made between the Anishinaabe, Mississaugas, and Haudenosaunee, where nations entered into an agreement to protect the land and responsibly care for its resources in harmony together.

As settlers, newcomers, refugees, and Indigenous peoples, we have all been invited into this treaty in the spirit of peace, friendship, and respect. We are also mindful of broken treaties that persist across Turtle Island today and recognize our responsibilities as Treaty people to engage in a meaningful, continuous process of truth and reconciliation with all our relations.

NON COMPLIANCE

If the club organizers feel that any athlete, participant or parent are not adhering to the club code of conduct, they may be asked to discontinue membership and/or no longer attend club events. No refund of fees will be issued. I agree to comply with the organizer’s decision.
